Williamsburg/Williamsburg, or, Historical Nonpareils
Project for WBURG by Stephen Keene
.

Steve Keene's personal take on art and history, popular culture and music, color theory and flatness can all be described in two words: nonhierarchical and omnivorous. His loosely painted renderings of high and low culture heroes and landscapes - which he produces in endless, assiduous streams from his Greenpoint studio - are bought and traded somewhat like baseball cards, and sample imagery from such apposite sources as Canaletto, Buffy Sainte-Marie and advertising.

A graduate of the Yale MFA program in the 80's, Keene began working with various bands (notably, Pavement, Martin's Folly, Apples in Stereo) to create cover art during the 90's. Most recently, he has set up shop in museums and galleries in Los Angeles , Grand Rapids , Houston , Melbourne and Cologne , delivering his own brand of post-industrial, production line painting in a consumer friendly format to viewers worldwide.

This curiosity shop fusing Olde Williamsburg , Virginia and today's Williamsburg , Brooklyn , is created exclusively for WBURG…(Ed.)
